Want RPL to come to your school?

We visited Hugh McRoberts Secondary School yesterday and today! We talked to the students about all the new must-read books that are out right now and the books the RPL teen librarian are super excited about.

We will be going to some more high schools in Richmond this year, and we can’t wait! We have so much fun on these visits and we love finding out what books you’re excited about.

Ten Books To Talk About

There are good books,  there are great books, and then there are books that just go above and beyond any expectation. Some of them deal with topics you have never seen before being addressed on a YA book while others take something that has been so many times, and finally do it right or in a completely unexpected way. These are books that get stuck in your head, books you think about well after you finished them, these are books that you just can`t help but talk about.

A World Without You by Beth Revis

This is my favourite book of 2016!!! I could not put it down. Not only is this book by one of my favourite teen authors, Beth Revis , but it's an amazing read!

It is told from two points of view: Bo and his sister Phoebe.

Bo, 17 years old, believes he can travel through time. At 10 years old, he traveled back in time to watch the sinking of the Titanic. At 15 years old, he went back in time to witness part of the American Civil War. But no one believes him. His parents don't know what to do with him and send him off to a special school. Bo believes this school is for kids with superpowers.

Phoebe, along with the rest of their family, believe Bo doesn't posses the ability to travel through time, but that he is mentally ill. She believes that he has created this fictional side of himself as a way to escape reality.

This book is fantastic!! It's gripping, powerful and has a little bit of everything: fantasy, drama, mystery, humour and a love story. Trust me, just read it and you will be totally captivated by A World Without You too.

Women's March 2017

Did anyone go to the Women's March on Saturday, January 21?

CBC said "Tens of thousands of people gathered at Vancouver's Jack Poole Plaza Saturday morning and marched through the streets of the city's downtown core as part of the Women's March Vancouver." Where you there?

If you are looking for more books on activism, RPL has these books you can check out. This book, Be A Changemaker by Laurie Ann Thompson, is one of our favourites.

The Telling by Alexandra Sirowy (Interesting, no?)

Are you a fan of mystery and thrillers? Then, The Telling by Alexandra Sirowy is definitely going to be the book for you! It stars Lana, a high school girl whose enchanting step-brother, Ben, has been murdered. He was the biggest portion of her childhood and was her role model. Now that he is gone, Lana has changed into what he used to be, a daredevil who is trying to live Ben’s life for him. That is until the murders continue.
The Telling

For fans of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None this is an intriguing book. There are many plot twists and you could never guess the ending, which definitely turns out to be a surprise. Lana is a brave, strong character and this story will pull you in and leave you needing to finish this book within the night. As most people know, I am not a fan of anything related to any type of mystery horrors, but this was a perfect mix of mystery thriller, realistic fiction and adventure. I felt a strong connection to the plight the protagonist was experiencing, which is probably why I kept going even if I am a bit of a scaredy-cat. The Telling is an incredibly enthralling book and even if it does not seem attractive to you right now, give it a chance!
